Makeup is all about playing and experimenting with beauty products and your look, but there are some tried and true rules that stand the test of time.

It all starts with healthy skin

Maintaining a glowing, healthy complexion should be the first priority in your beauty routine. Products containing Retinol or vitamin C will be promote collagen production (which will help improve skin texture) while daily exfoliation with a gentle facial scrub will slough off dead skin cells and help keep your pores clear. And washing your face before going to bed every night is non-negotiable if you want your skin to look its best—if you’re really exhausted and just want to fall into bed, use a facial cleansing cloth to quickly wipe off makeup and dirt.

Apply foundation only where needed

If you automatically apply foundation all over your face, you may be wasting product and time – and depriving yourself of a naturally fresh faced look. “You don’ t need to wear foundation all over the face,” says MaryAnn Richardson, a makeup artist who splits her time between Vancouver, London and New York. “You only need to apply it where it’s needed and quite often people only need to apply foundation to cover certain areas that have uneven pigmentation and they can then leave the rest of the skin bare,” she says, to show off your true fresh, natural skin. Another option if you really can’t do without coverage all over your face: tinted moisturizer or one of the new BB creams, which offer light, natural-looking coverage as well as skin treatment benefits.

Foundation should be applied and well blended just past the jaw line

One look at the stunning Emma Stone in a red lipstick and that’s all the proof you need that redheads can indeed wear a crimson shade on their lips. “In fact, a bold red lip on a redhead makes the hair colour pop,” says Richardson.

That said, if you do choose to apply foundation all over your face to even out your skin tone, ensure you blend and work your makeup past the jaw line and into the neck area just slightly so you can avoid that mask look if your shade choice is a tad off.

Redheads can wear red lipstick

Matchy-matchy isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes eye shadow, but to make your eyes stand out more, you’re better off using shades that enhance your eye colour, says Richardson. She suggests bronze or golden tones for blue eyes, plum tones for green and hazel eyes, and green and aquamarine colours for brown eyes. “Doing this helps your eyes really become a key feature of your look,” she says.

Sunscreen is your best anti-aging product

You may be drawn to the allure of Botox and fillers to help you turn back the hands of time, but if you’re not wearing sunscreen every day, you’re missing out on the best anti-aging product out there. Damage from the sun’s UV rays can cause everything from age spots to fine lines and wrinkles.
